As consumers try to find safe places for their cash, they’re putting banks in a pickle. Banks actually pay to keep you cash and because they’re not lending it or investing it, it’s costing them money.

Money market fund story updated with a comment from the Investment Company Institute. NEW YORK — Money market funds investing in U.S. Treasuries have been drastically reducing maturities in recent days, amid fear that the prospect of a government default may lead to a wave of redemptions.
